— Psalm 119
The great scientist Albert Einstein once famously said, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is.”
When asked whether he was an atheist, this brilliant man said he preferred to be called an agnostic or non-believer. Can you imagine what he could have done if he had been a believer?
People with a finely honed spiritual insight will often tell you that miracles, large and small, are all around us, as Einstein posited. We just don’t see them. And why don’t we see them?
Probably because of our pain after someone we love dies. Probably because most of us aren’t attuned to immediately recognize the work of God in our everyday lives. He’s often in the details … although there are some occasions, such as the parting of the Red Sea and the raising of Lazarus when he’s larger than life. Probably because our world is consumed by distractions. We don’t have the sensitivities to recognize what Mother Teresa called “the pencil of God” in events, especially in our lives. That doesn’t mean it’s not there, because, indeed, there are miracles all around us.
There’s something you can do to make yourself more receptive to recognizing the miraculous. Simply ask, “Jesus show me the miracles” and with a simple outpouring of grace, ask him to open your eyes to his actions in your life as he makes all things new … even while you are grieving.
You see, Jesus weaves miracles into the fabric of our lives — and not only lives filled with joy, but also lives filled with suffering. So keep your focus on Jesus and stay alert on your healing journey.
