“You will be consoled according to the greatness of your sorrow and affliction; the greater the suffering, the greater will be the reward.”
— St. Mary Magdalen de’Pazzi
So many of us, so often in life, in strife and loneliness and loss, look up at the sky and ask, “Are you there, God?” When the pain is great and the friends are few and we have nowhere else to turn, we turn to God … who should be our first choice.
“Are you there, God?” Or maybe we ask, “Where are you, God?” Or “Can’t you show yourself or at least talk a little louder so I can hear?”
It is the collective cry of humanity in its suffering, and just a quick glance at the morning news will show you that humanity is suffering, from natural disasters, from war, from political unrest, from crime, from famine, from disease, from despair and from personal loss. These are trials that have afflicted the world since the beginning of time. And since the beginning of time, humanity has wondered, “Where are you, God?”
Pause in the silence, pause in your solitude, pause in your grief, and ask again, “Are you there, God?”
And God will answer: “I am here with you and have never left you and will never leave you.”
