The sound of wind chimes gently tinkling in the breeze is a reminder for many of us who are grieving that our loved ones are still nearby, watching over us. They can bring peace and calm during times of stress.
Wind chimes have existed for thousands of years and have been used in China and India since around 1,000 BCE. In Ancient Rome, they were known as tintinnabulum and made of bronze with bells hanging from them to bring good fortune.
Throughout the centuries, different cultures created wind chimes from different materials, including shells, wood, bamboo, ceramic and metal.
They were very popular throughout Asia, particularly in pagodas and temples, where they were also used to keep away birds in addition to evil spirits. They are often used in Feng Shui and believed to be helpful in promoting chi, or the life energy.
Today, there is another purpose. They are called memorial wind chimes or sympathy wind chimes to help bring peace to those who have suffered a loss with soothing sounds. They are also a reminder that the person they loved is always nearby.
Many are made specifically to honor a loved one and have inscriptions and verses such as:
“Listen to the wind and think of me. In your heart, I’ll always be.”
And:
I am here
In the gentle breezes that blow,
In the sun’s morning glow,
In the flock that takes flight,
In the twinkling stars of night,
I am here.
