Autumn memories come flooding back
By Nancy
I have many, many happy memories of our Sunday family drives. When we lived in The Bronx, my Dad took us on drives to Westchester County, weaving through the Hutch and the Bronx River Parkways on our way to “the country.”
Drives in our Bronx neighborhoods often included a trip to Howard Johnson, with those bright orange and turquoise colors inside and out. I still remember how children were given menus with crayons. And how can anyone choose from 28 flavors? I still ordered vanilla.
When we moved to New Rochelle, my Dad drove up to Schultz Farm in Armonk, which really felt like the country. At one point, around this time, he owned a used black Cadillac.
The best thing ever was the hot chocolate and delicious cinnamon donuts — freshly made in front of us. They were coated with cinnamon and the bag got oily in the way zeppole do when you buy them at the feast.
With the crisp air and leaves falling, those autumn memories of our time together always come flooding back.
