One of the most well-known Southern folk hymns is “My Song in the Night.” While little is known of its origins, the hymn was clearly inspired by passages in Scripture, including Psalm 77:6, “I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with my own heart, and my spirit made diligent search.” And Job 35:10, which says, “Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night?”

This prayer pleads with Jesus for comfort and consolation and has special meaning for those of us suffering from grief or any type of trial and loss, urging the Lord to come to us in our affliction: “Jesus, my Savior, my song in the night; come with Thy tender love, my soul’s delight.”

My Song In The Night

O Jesus, my Savior, my song in the night
Come to us with Thy tender love, my souls’ delight,
Unto Thee O Lord in affliction I call,
My comfort by day and my song In the night.
O why should I wander an alien from Thee,
Or cry in the desert Thy face to see,
My comfort and joy, my souls’ delight,
O Jesus my Savior, my song in the night
