The following excerpt from the book “Staying in Place” by Anne, a lay apostle, is about loving in response to love. Reading these words will remind us all that the love we have experienced is everlasting and cannot be erased by death.
“We are loved. We are all loved. There come moments in each life where one wonders in isolation from all others, ‘Am I loved?’ And while there may come no immediate consolation, no certainty, no response from what seems to be a surgical, cold universe, the truth can be quickly ascertained by another question.
Do I love? Who do I love? Who have I loved in the past? If nobody comes to mind in the present, then I ask the question of myself, ‘Have I ever loved in the past?’ Was there a person for whom I reserved the best expression of myself in an unselfish attempt to protect, assist, or preserve? Or is it that I wish I had offered a person love that was unselfish enough to preserve that person from all selfish human demands? Because there is a moment when we look upon another and experience tenderness of such strength that it can only come from God. And in that moment, we seek not to ruin. Our heart’s desire is to protect another from any negative impact that will come from our wounded humanity. We seek to love them as God loves, in purity, in constancy, and in wisdom. We hope that if we can get it right, a good thing will be enshrined and preserved. We intuitively hope that we will act as God acts.”
