“We humans have lost the wisdom of genuinely resting and relaxing. We worry too much.
We don’t allow our bodies to heal, and we don’t allow our minds and hearts to heal.”
— Thich Nhat Hanh
Are you tired? Grief takes a lot out of you emotionally and spiritually, but also physically. You may actually be suffering from chronic fatigue. Grieving is emotionally exhausting. Your mind will be constantly racing, even during hours when you should be sleeping. Sleep will be difficult and you may suffer from insomnia. Even if you are able to get to sleep, you will often find yourself lying awake when your sleep is interrupted.
Everything you are trying to forget will hold you hostage. Thoughts about the past and the future, regrets and anxieties and the terrible pain that comes with loss. Early on in grief, it is not uncommon to stay awake, relieving the events surrounding a death — and playing the movie over and over again in your mind. When you finally get some sleep, you may be disappointed to discover that all the sadness is still waiting for you in the light of day.
Grieving is a painful process that will tire you out like few other experiences. Being tired comes with the territory, so make a conscious effort to rest and get sleep when you can. See your doctor if you find yourself suffering from chronic insomnia.
They say a good night’s sleep can solve many problems, but yours may still be there when you wake up. However, you will have the stamina to continue your healing journey.
Sleeping will be difficult, but there are tactics you can use to make it easier. Learn to relax with soothing music. Also, try restful practices, such as a hot bath, meditation, yoga and deep breathing to release stress. Try to exercise and look for every opportunity to get out in the fresh air and experience nature.

When you are grieving, take every precaution to avoid becoming exhausted. If you cannot sleep, at least find time to rest during the day.
