Dorothy Norwood performing “Somebody Prayed for Me”One of the most popular spirituals, which captures the hearts of everyone who hears it, is “Somebody Prayed for Me.” The song has special meaning for those who are grieving, sick or depressed. It touches anyone who found the light after wandering in darkness … and realized someone’s prayers were responsible. There are several versions of the song, but one in particular that has received worldwide acclaim is by Gospel singer and songwriter Dorothy Norwood, who was born in Georgia in 1935 and began touring with her family, the Norwood Gospel Singers, when she was 8 years old. By 1956, she was performing with the incomparable Mahalia Jackson. If you are on your healing journey, never hesitate to ask someone, “Pray for me,” and never hesitate to tell someone else who is hurting, “I’ll pray for you.”

Somebody Prayed for Me

Somebody prayed for me,
had me on their mind,
they took the time and prayed for me.
(Oh Yes they did, I’m so glad)
I’m so glad they prayed (2x),
(So glad they prayed) (2x)
I’m so glad they prayed for me.

The preacher prayed for me
had me on his mind,
he took the time and prayed for me.
(Oh Yes he did, I’m so glad)

I’m so glad he prayed (2x),
I’m so glad he prayed for me.

My mother prayed for me,
(Hallelujah)had me on her mind,
she took the time out and prayed for me.
(Oh Yes they did, I’m so glad)

I’m so glad she prayed (2x),
I’m so glad she prayed for me.

My mother prayed for me,
(Thank You Mother – Thank You Mother)
had me on her mind,
she took the time out and prayed for me.
(Oh Yes they did, I’m so glad)
