When Dan’s daughter told him she was getting a divorce, he was devastated. Ten years of marriage and it was ending. By the time he was told, the decision was a fait accompli, and there was really nothing he could do. It bothered him that she had been moving in this direction for so many months without even giving them a hint that she was hurting or about to make a major decision that would affect her and her 7-year-old son.
All he could do was listen because she was past the point where she took advice. Sometimes when you’re a parent, there’s not much you can do except stand there like an innocent bystander while the world is falling apart. So he and his wife did the only thing they could do — they prayed. They prayed that everything would work out in the end, according to God’s plan.
While he was rummaging through a box of family photos, he came upon several of his daughter as a young girl with her grandparents, and all he could say was “Mom, Dad, help her please.”
In many cultures it is common to pray to ancestors and ask for help. As Christians we don’t practice ancestor worship, but we believe they are there to pray for our intentions. So we should always ask them to pray for us. We’ll never understand the full effect of their prayers until we meet them again in the next life.
Dan took the photos and placed them in front of a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the bureau, and whenever he passed by, he would utter, “Mom and Dad, please pray for her.”
