What exactly is Heaven? We talk a lot about it and going there should be our life’s goal. Millions of words have been written about Heaven, and in recent years there have been numerous accounts of people who died and went there and got a glimpse of it during their near-death experiences.

Cloudy SkyHeaven, we are told is a place of infinite love and joy that we’ll never fully understand on Earth. The holier we become in our earthly lives, the easier it will be to enter Heaven, which will be like a homecoming when we’ll see everyone we loved and knew who went before us.

Even the explanation in the Catechism of the Catholic Church falls short, it seems:

“1023 Those who die in God’s grace and friendship and are perfectly purified live forever with Christ. They are like God forever, for they ‘see him as he is,’ face to face…

“1024 This perfect life with the Most Holy Trinity — this communion of life and love with the Trinity, with the Virgin Mary, the angels and all the blessed — is called ‘heaven.’ Heaven is the ultimate end and fulfillment of the deepest human longings, the state of supreme, definitive happiness…

“1027 This mystery of blessed communion with God and all who are in Christ is beyond all understanding and description. Scripture speaks of it in images: life, light, peace, wedding feast, wine of the kingdom, the Father’s house, the heavenly Jerusalem, paradise: ‘no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him.’”

One other thing. Of the countless people who have had near-death experiences and were given the barest glimpse of heaven, virtually all of them never want to return to Earth, and neither do they fear death because they know that what lies before them is grander and greater than anything they have ever known. For Jesus, our arrival in Heaven will be like a homecoming. He eagerly awaits our arrival, as do our loved ones who have gone before and who will welcome us on our arrival in a joyous reunion.
