St Jude Thaddeus

Today is the feast of St. Jude, one of the 12 Apostles and patron saint of hopeless causes. Also known as St. Jude Thaddeus, he is believed to have been a cousin of Jesus. Countless people over the centuries have sought his intercession in prayer. St. Bridget of Sweden said that in a vision, Christ urged her to pray to him: “In accordance with his surname, Thaddeus, the amiable or loving, Saint Jude will show himself most willing to help.” St. Jude is often depicted holding an image of Christ, which is based on a pious tradition whereby a king who suffered from leprosy was cured after the saint gave him a cloth that had touched the face of Jesus. St. Jude, pray for us.

Prayer to St. Jude

God the Father, give me hope.
Help me to know that your hope
is alive in me as I offer kindness,
forgiveness, compassion and tenderness to others,
especially to those who have suffered a loss.
I seek the calm that comes
from trusting in your hope
and your healing presence.
I trust that your servant St. Jude
walks with me in all the blessings
and challenges of my life
and intercedes on behalf of my petitions.
St. Jude, fill my heart with hope.
